The First Annual Summer 2013 Anime Madness Tournament is officially under way as the results for six of the 18 first round match-ups are now available! The first round will take place through week 7 of the season (Saturday August 24th) and will see the number of anime eligible for the title decrease from 50 to 32.

Automatic Winners (Bye Week) for the first round are:  Monogatari, High School DxD, Sunday Without God, Senyu, Saint Seiya Omega, Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live, Ro-Kyu-Bu! SS, Gifu Dodo!!, Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA ILLYA, Rozen Maiden Zuruckspulen, Toriko, The Eccentric Family, Tamayura: More Agressive, Makai Ouiji: Devils and Realist.

First Round: Matches 1 – 6 of 18
Mushibugyo Defeats Hyper Dimension Neptunia:
Mushibugyo Episode 18 - Time's Up! The Insect Magistrate's Office Arrives!
This was a very difficult decision for me. Hyperdimension Neptunia is drawn better, has better bad guys, and has considerably more sexy girls getting molested by tentacles.. so you would think that I would pick it, but it just seemed to be missing something this week. Plus, Tsukishima Jinbei finally almost got to first base this week (unbeknownst to him), and I’m really excited to see where that is headed. Mushibugyo moves on to the second round to challenge Monogatari!
Naruto Shippuden Defeats Kingdom 2:
Naruto Shippuden
Man, this wasn’t even close. Kingdom 2 is probably the most boring meant-for-boys anime that I have seen so far this season. There are horses and bows and arrows and tons of characters that nobody relates to or cares about. That’s about the gist of that show. Meanwhile, Naruto Shippuden is the most intense that it has ever been in the history of the 544-episode franchise. The illustration has been movie theater quality as of late and the plot feels like it is finally (somewhat) nearing a grand conclusion. Naruto awaits the winner of Genshiken and Stella Women’s Academy!
Danganronpa Defeats A Town Where You Live:
Danganronpa: The Animation Episode - 6 - Sub (Not) Normal Arc: Return of the New Century Galaxy Legend! O Armored Hero, Stand upon the Earth!
Also a fairly easy decision. A Town Where You Live is not awful, but it does seem to be moving at a pretty slow pace. It also doesn’t help that I am clearly not the target demographic for this series haha. Meanwhile Danganronpa blows my mind every time I watch it and could be well on its way to a Final Four appearance if it keeps up the momentum it currently has. Danganronpa is unique and unpredictable, but will it have what it takes to knock off Ro-Kyu-Bu! SS in the next round?
Hunter X Hunter Defeats Dog & Scissors:
Hunter x Hunter Episode 92 - One Wish x And x Two Promises
A unfortunate first round matchup with Hunter x Hunter has Dog & Scissors headed home early in this Summer 2013 Anime Madness Tournament. I don’t pick the way the brackets are set up! You can blame for that. Anyways, the dog is cute and all, but Hunter X Hunter is moving on. This week wasn’t Hunter x Hunter’s best – probably the least amount of Gon or Kilua in a single episode since the characters were introduced. They will have to clean up their act if they want to survive next week against Pretty Rhythym: Rainbow Live.
WataMote Defeats Teekyu:
WATAMOTE ~No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys Fault I’m Not Popular!~ Since I'm Not Popular, I'll Boost My Skills
It is going to take a LOT from one anime to knock off WataMote in this tournament. Kuroki is my future wife. I don’t care if she’s 14 or if she isn’t really IRL, I will marry that cartoon girl. Teekyu is short and funny, so needless to say I can relate to the series (Ba-Zing!). However, WataMote is about an awkward, perverted 14-year-old girl with no friends or social skills, so it could more or less be my autobiography. AND they made fun of Akira this week (see above photo) – brilliant. WataMote will try to make its way to the Sweet 16 next round when it faces off against Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA ILLYA!
Blood Lad Defeats Majestic Prince:
Blood Lad Episode 5 – Unidentified Demon Object
This was a somewhat difficult decision, as I’ve grown pretty fond of the gang from Majestic Prince, but in the end Blood Lad is the better series at the moment. It also didn’t help Majestic Prince that this week’s episode of Blood Lad was the best yet.. Staz Charlie Blood’s hidden powers have finally been reawakened! Blood Lad has arguably the best protagonist, supporting cast and sense of humor amongst all currently running series. Check back next week to find out if it will be facing KINMOZA! or Futari wa Milky Holmes in the second round!
Here is a look at the bracket so far:
